Ingredients
Yield: 4 servings
For the Beef
- 1 lb flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tbsp soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
- 1 tsp sesame oil
For the Sauce
- ½ cup beef broth
- ¼ cup soy sauce (low sodium preferred)
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce (optional, but recommended for depth)
- 1 tbsp honey or brown sugar
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tsp grated fresh ginger
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp cornstarch
For the Stir-Fry
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil or canola oil
- 4 cups broccoli florets
- Cooked rice, for serving
- Sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)
Preparation
Step 1
In a medium bowl, combine the thinly sliced beef with 1 tbsp cornstarch, 1 tbsp soy sauce, and 1 tsp sesame oil. Toss to coat and set aside while you prepare the rest of the ingredients.
Step 2
In another bowl, whisk together all the sauce ingredients: beef broth, ¼ cup soy sauce, oyster sauce (if using), honey or brown sugar, rice vinegar, ginger, garlic, and 1 tsp cornstarch. Set aside.
Step 3
Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the broccoli florets and stir-fry for 3-5 minutes until bright green and tender-crisp. Remove broccoli from the pan and set aside.
Step 4
Add the marinated beef to the hot pan in a single layer (you may need to do this in two batches to avoid overcrowding). Cook for 2-3 minutes per side until browned and cooked through. Remove beef from the pan and set aside with the broccoli.
Step 5
Give the prepared sauce a quick whisk, then pour it into the hot pan. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 1-2 minutes.
Step 6
Return the cooked beef and broccoli to the pan. Toss everything to coat evenly in the thickened sauce. Cook for 1-2 minutes more to heat through. Serve immediately over cooked rice, garnished with sesame seeds if desired.
Tips
- To get super thin beef slices, partially freeze the flank steak for 15-20 minutes before slicing.
- For extra veggies, add sliced carrots or bell peppers along with the broccoli.
- Adjust the amount of honey or brown sugar to your preferred level of sweetness.
