Ingredients
Yield: 2 servings
For the Fish
- 2 (6-ounce) white fish fillets (cod, tilapia, or haddock work well)
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter, melted
For the Tartar Sauce
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped dill pickles or relish
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill or parsley (optional)
- Pinch of sugar (optional)
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet or line with parchment paper. Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels.
Step 2
Prepare three shallow dishes: one with flour, one with the beaten egg, and one with panko breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, paprika, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Step 3
Dredge each fish fillet first in flour, shaking off excess. Then dip in the beaten egg, allowing excess to drip off. Finally, press firmly into the panko mixture until fully coated.
Step 4
Place the coated fish fillets on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle or brush the melted olive oil/butter over the top of each fillet.
Step 5
Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the fish is flaky and cooked through, and the crust is golden brown and crispy.
Step 6
While the fish bakes, make the tartar sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, chopped pickles/relish, lemon juice, chopped dill/parsley (if using), and a pinch of sugar (if using). Stir well. Taste and adjust seasoning.
Step 7
Serve the crispy baked fish immediately with the homemade tartar sauce and your favorite side dishes.
Tips
- For extra crispiness, place the fish on a wire rack set inside the baking sheet.
- Ensure your fish fillets are about an even thickness for best cooking results.
