Forget your usual fries – it’s time to meet Halloumi Fries! These golden, salty, and utterly addictive cheese sticks are pan-fried until crispy on the outside and wonderfully melty on the inside. Paired with a vibrant, zesty dipping sauce, they make an incredible appetizer, a fun side dish, or even a light lunch. You'll be amazed at how quickly these disappear!
Ingredients
Yield: 2 servings
Halloumi Fries
- 8 oz halloumi cheese block, patted dry
- 1 tbsp olive oil (plus more if needed)
- Optional: Pinch of dried oregano or sumac for seasoning
Zesty Dipping Sauce
- 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt or sour cream
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped (or 1 tsp dried dill)
- 1/2 clove garlic, minced (or 1/4 tsp garlic powder)
- Pinch of salt and black pepper
Preparation
Step 1
First, make the dipping sauce: In a small bowl, combine Greek yogurt (or sour cream), lemon juice, chopped dill, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Stir well until combined. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Set aside.
Step 2
Pat the halloumi cheese block very dry with paper towels. This helps ensure it gets crispy. Slice the halloumi into 1/2-inch thick sticks, resembling fries.
Step 3
Heat 1 tbsp olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the halloumi fries in a single layer, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan (cook in batches if necessary). Sprinkle with optional oregano or sumac.
Step 4
Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and crispy. Use tongs to flip them gently.
Step 5
Transfer the cooked halloumi fries to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve immediately with the zesty dipping sauce.
Tips
- Ensure the halloumi is very dry before frying to prevent splattering and achieve maximum crispiness.
- Don't overcrowd the pan; this is key for crispy, not steamed, halloumi.
- Try serving these as a starter with a simple green salad for a light meal.
