Ingredients
Yield: 4 servings
Main
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb Italian sausage (sweet or spicy), casings removed
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup chicken or vegetable broth
- 1/2 tsp dried basil
- 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 (16 oz) package shelf-stable potato gnocchi
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 2
Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet (or Dutch oven) over medium-high heat. Add sausage, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Drain off excess fat and transfer sausage to a plate, leaving a little fat in the pan.
Step 3
Add chopped onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
Step 4
Stir in crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, dried basil, and red pepper flakes (if using). Bring to a simmer. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
Step 5
Stir in the gnocchi, cooked sausage, and heavy cream. Mix well to combine. Sprinkle the mozzarella cheese evenly over the top, then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
Step 6
Transfer the skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the sauce is bubbly and the cheese is melted and lightly golden. If desired, you can broil for the last 1-2 minutes for extra browning on the cheese.
Step 7
Let rest for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley, if desired.
Tips
- Add a handful of fresh spinach when you stir in the gnocchi for a little extra veggie power.
- For an even richer flavor, use a good quality San Marzano crushed tomato.
